- DIRNAV -- Version 1.0
- DIRectory NAVigator
-
- DIRNAV is a DIRectory NAVigation program for PC compatible computers. It is
- intended to replace or augment the MS-DOS 'CHDIR' function. DIRNAV provides a
- full screen view of the contents of the specified or current directory (sub-
- directories and files), plus the ability to navigate (change) directories using
- simple keystrokes.
-
- DIRNAV is invoked by issuing one of the following commands at the DOS prompt:
-
- DN<enter>
- DN <directory specification><enter>
-
- If DIRNAV is invoked without arguments, the current directory is used for the
- initial display. If a specification is given, that directory is used for the
- initial display.
-
- The DIRNAV display consists of three areas. The first line of the display
- contains the directory specification of the directory contents being displayed.
- The second area is the sub-directory display and the third area is the file
- name display.
-
- CURRENT DIRECTORY SPECIFICATION
-
- The current directory is displayed on the first line. Pressing ENTER will cause
- the displayed directory to become the default directory. DIRNAV will terminate
- and restore the display to the condition prior to its invocation.
-
- You may go 'up' one level to the parent directory of the current directory by
- pressing the 'PgUp' key. The parent directory will become the new current
- directory and the display will be updated.
-
- SUBDIRECTORY DISPLAY AREA
-
- Subdirectories contained in the current directory will be displayed in this
- area in alphabetical order. One of the subdirectory names will be highlighted.
- If you got to the current directory display by pressing the 'PgUp' key (see
- below), the highlighted subdirectory will be the one you just came from. If you
- got to the current directory display by pressing the 'PgDn' key, the
- subdirectory highlighted will depend upon previous navigation (see section on
- PG UP - PG DN PATHS below).
-
- The subdirectory name highlighted may be changed by using the four 'arrow' keys
- or the 'home' or 'end' keys on the numeric keypad portion of the keyboard (Num
- Lock is not required to be activated).
-
- You may also hit a key corresponding to the first character of any displayed
- subdirectory. This will cause the next (alphabetically) subdirectory name that
- has a matching first character to be highlighted.
-
- The highlighted subdirectory may be made the current directory by pressing the
- 'PgDn' key. The display will be updated to reflect the information concerning
- the new current directory.
-
-
- FILE NAME DISPLAY AREA
-
- Files contained in the current directory will be displayed in the area under
- the Files separator line in alphabetical order. The total number of files and
- the total of the file sizes will also be displayed on the separator line. Only
- as many file names as will fit on the remaining display area under the
- subdirectory display will be shown at once. If there are more file names than
- can be displayed at once, the remaining file names may be paged through by
- using the 'Grey +' key to page down alphabetically, and by using the 'Grey -'
- key to page up.
-
- PG UP - PG DN PATHS
-
- DIRNAV 'remembers' the 'path' to the lowest level subdirectory you have entered
- along a path. This means that you can navigate up and down along that path by
- using only the 'Pg Up' and 'Pg Dn'. For example, if the current directory is
- 'C:\LVL1\LVL2\LVL3\LVL4', pressing 'PgUp' four times will make 'C:\' the
- current directory, and, because DIRNAV remembers where you came from, pressing
- 'PgDn' four times will return you to the 'LVL4' subdirectory you started from.
- If you change the path on the way back down, or if you have not been below a
- certain level, then DIRNAV will default to entering the first subdirectory
- displayed in the Subdirectory Display Area at each new lower level.
-
- HOMING
-
- You may return to the home directory display (the one you originally started
- from) at any time by pressing the 'Grey *' key.
-
- ABORTING
-
- DIRNAV may be exited, returning you to the original default directory you were
- in, by pressing the 'Esc' key.
-
- LIMITATIONS
-
- DIRNAV can only display as many subdirectories as will fit on the screen at one
- time. This is currently 100. An error message will be displayed if the current
- directory contains more than 100 subdirectories.
-
- DIRNAV has room to display only 500 file names, less the number of
- subdirectories. An error message will be displayed if the current directory
- contains a total of more than 500 file names and subdirectories.
